For the burgers (makes 5)
You will need:
450g of extra lean (5% fat) minced beef
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
1 medium egg, beaten
Salt and pepper to season
Frylight spray
Medium sized (60g) wholemeal roll, per person
1 reduced fat slice of cheese, per burger
Lettuce, tomato and red onion slices
Pre-heat your oven to 180c
– In a large bowl, stir together the minced beef and onion until evenly mixed. Add the beaten egg and seasoning and stir well.
– On a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper, divide the mixture into 5 even portions and press firmly into a burger shape.
– (You can buy fancy little burger-press gadgets, but a large cookie cutter or egg poaching ring works just as well )
– Spritz a hot frying pan with Frylight and cook the burgers for a couple of minutes each side to get a nice colour. Then, pop in the oven for 15 minutes – or until fully cooked all the way through
For the chips / fries
You will need:
1 – 2 large potatoes per person
Salt and pepper to season
Frylight spray
– Peal and slice your potatoes into chip / fry pieces and soak in a bowl of cold water for a couple of minutes to remove any excess starch.
– Drain away the water and pat your chips dry with some kitchen towel to remove any water.
– Spread evenly on a non-stick baking try and spritz with Frylight.
– Pop into a hot oven and cook for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through. Cook until golden brown.
– Season and serve!
(My non-stick trays are ruined, hence the handy layer of Bacofoil!)
These burgers are also great served with a fried egg on top, or lean crispy bacon slices!
You should also try the chips with a sprinkle of paprika instead of salt and pepper – very tasty, too!

There’s nothing like a simple homemade burger patty above all in the barbecue at this time of the year

Lol. I had no idea how much fat and additives were in regular store-bought burgers. Homemade all the way here, from now on!

They look yummy!!!
I try to make a lot of my food myself but at the moment we seem to be living on convenience rather than anything else… It also doesn’t help that I keep forgetting to go to the Farm Shop to stock up on fruit and veg!

Beth, oh I totally hear you! It makes such a difference when I take the time to meal plan (and shop!) for better food.
