How To Make A No-Sew Cape For Halloween
You will need:
- 1 meter of black felt fabric
- Scissors
- 1 meter of black ribbon, 1″ wide
The black felt I purchased was a double-width fabric, meaning it was folded along the length. Since I did not require a double-thickness, I simply cut along the fold giving me two pieces to make two capes.
Note: If you are making this for an older child or adult this Halloween, you may wish to unfold the fabric and adjust the length to suit your preferred height.
Taking your single piece of felt, fold the long edge up approximately 4 inches. This will determine the height of your cape collar, so you can adjust this depth more / less to suit your personal requirements.
Note: this is a no-sew cape which I made for ease. I did not pin or iron this fold. Keep it simple
Taking your scissors, make small ½ inch cuts approximately 3 inches apart along the folded edge.
Ensure you have an even number of cuts along the edge as this will result in your threaded ribbon ends (next stage) both ending up on the same side of the fabric.
With your felt fabric laid flat, take your piece of ribbon and thread it through your incisions.
Tip: If your ribbon end starts to fray, heat gently with a lighter to seal the edges.
Hold the ends of your ribbon and gently gather your cape into loose pleats…
Tie the ends of a ribbon in a loose bow to secure and you’re ready to go!
Cost
- 1m of felt fabric, £1.99 (cut in half = £1)
- 1m of black ribbon, £0.30
Total cost for no-sew Halloween cape is just £1.30
So quick and easy to make, don’t limit yourself to just Halloween. Why not make capes in other bright, fun colours and turn every day into a super hero adventure!
