A Very Happy Birthday Cake

Growing up, birthday cakes were always homemade by my mum – never shop bought. With so many fond memories to cherish, it’s a tradition I’m following with my own children, too.

But there is one birthday cake that has us howling with laughter ever year.

It’s my dear mum’s hedgehog birthday cake to me.

Many years ago, mesmerised by a chocolate button and buttercream creation seen in mum’s cookbook collection, I was thrilled at the prospect of having a chocolate hedgehog birthday cake all of my own. My mum is the most AMAZING cake baker, but, um, let’s just say ‘hedgehog creator’ is not a forté.

I will never forget the tears of laughter that flowed that year. Was it a mole? A ferret? Roadkill?

I’m sorry mum – my belly still hurts from all the laughter.

And whilst mum feigned hurt and insult, she truly is a great sport with hedgehog birthday cakes now a firm tradition for me in our family.

Every year bringing a new surprise.

Without fail, mum’s birthday hedgehog cake always tastes amazing and even though I’m now all grown up, I still look forward to them every year.

I love you mum!

Do you have any birthday cake traditions in your family? Tell me what you look forward to every year!

I love homemade birthday cakes! We only had ‘special’ ones for the first 3 birthdays, then it was just a sheet cake, but it’s the thought that counts!

    That hedgehog cake is ADORABLE!

In my family we always have a birthday dinner. For my daughter’s 3rd birthday she wanted Chinese (really kid?!) Anyways, every year my dad and I (our birthday’s are 2 days apart) have fried chicken. We jokingly ask each other what we want for dinner.

Haha, I love that you have a dinner tradition. And yay to your 3 year old requesting Chinese. I could accomdate that meal request! :)
